St. Patrick's Day Cupcakes, Decorating Ideas

Updated on March 15, 2014

A Fun Way To Celebrate, So Many Ways To Decorate!

Who doesn't love cupcakes? They are so simple and easy to make, and the decorating possibilities are endless. This St. Patrick's Day is going to be so much fun. I will be making several cupcakes for our family restaurant and for my family as well! I love experimenting with new ideas, toppings, flavors, etc. If you are going to be making cupcakes, you should definitely check out all the fun designs below. This isn't hard to do, and they look so amazing! All photos used belong to me, all rights reserved.

What You Will Need To Get Started Decorating

When you think of St. Patrick's Day you probably picture lots of green, leprechauns, rainbows, pots of gold, shamrocks or even four leaf clover! Using those thoughts for inspiration, you can create some very fun and unique cupcakes. Below you will find my own suggestions, but you can use whatever you would like for decorating them.

1.Cake Mix for the cupcakes. I bought a Duncan Hines chocolate cake mix, but any cake mix or flavor will do. If you prefer to make your cupcakes from scratch, check out the DIY cupcake mix video below. The box mixes do just fine though, and ours came out very moist and tasty.

2. Mini Marshmallows. This is a great option because they taste great on cupcakes, and you can use them for clouds on the rainbows!

3.Lucky Charms Cereal Marshmallows. If the little leprechaun on the box didn't give it away, it wouldn't be hard to figure out that these marshmallows would be perfect for St Patricks Day cupcakes. The rainbows and four leaf clovers are especially relevant and fun to decorate with.

4.M&M's. I separated the green from the rest, just by pouring them into a cup and picking through them. It didn't take long, and having the green ones handy makes decorating faster.

5. Icing. I bought some cream cheese icing, a tube of green decorating icing. You could also just use food coloring to make your own shades (blue+yellow makes green).

6. Mini Reese's Peanut Butter Cups. A great way to represent the pot of gold at the end of the rainbow. Also adds to the flavor, since these taste great!

7. Green Sugar Sprinkles. I bought a small canister of green sugar for decorating, which you can find in most baking isles. It was inexpensive, and it adds a nice touch to your cupcakes.

You can use so many other things, the opportunities are endless. Think green, gold, candies, chocolates, etc. You just have to get creative!

Now On To The Cupcakes...

This is a simple and easy way to decorate. I made green cupcakes by mixing a bit of green icing with the white. Then I just added some sprinkles. Not everyone likes a ton of toppings, so this simple design is perfect for those people.

This is a fairly easy design, just take your M&M's and make a rainbow. Use a mini marshmallow at each end for the clouds. I added a few sugar sprinkles too!

This was fairly simple, but too cute. I have a decorating bag with different tips, but you could easily use a zip lock bag and cut the tip of one end off. I just iced the cupcake with some of the pale green icing I mixed up. Then I decorated the edges with little dabs of darker green icing. Since these are for St. Patrick's Day, I had to attempt a little clover. I used M&Ms for that part!

This is one of my favorites! I just iced the cupcake regularly, added a few of the horseshoe marshmallows, and some sprinkles. This was simple, but I just love the way they look!

Another one I really like! I just decorated the edges with green icing, added M&Ms in the center, then a dab of icing in the middle of that. Covered in sugar sprinkles, then viola! A beautiful St. Patrick's Day cupcake!

To achieve this effect, I used white and green icing. I did a small spoonful of white, then a little bit of green. Side by side in the decorating bag (or zip lock if you're using that), then squeeze. When it comes out, its like a mixture of the two colors!

Since rainbows and leprechauns just seem to go together, I loved making these rainbow inspired designs. If you are doing a variety of designs these help add a pop of color to all the green! They stand alone on their own very well though, and taste great! Chocolate M&Ms and marshmallows, what could be better on top of your cupcake?

I just added several Lucky Charms cereal marshmallows on top of the cupcake, and some green sugar sprinkles. I must admit, this was the first one I ate and it was delicious!

3 leaf clover using M&Ms, and green icing. Simple, but tasty!

Another rainbow decorating idea, on top of green icing to really make it stand out! I layered the rainbow, and added marshmallows across the bottom. I can't wait to try this one, I bet it will be delicious!

This was a fun one to make, and since I love Reese's I'm sure it will taste delicious! I just added a Reese cup in the middle, with green M&Ms around it, followed by some sprinkles on top of the white icing.

DIY Cupcake Mix, And Frosting

Here is a great video that teaches you how to make your own cupcake frosting. I prefer the store bought cream cheese icing, but everyone has a preference!

Again, I love the Duncan Hines boxed chocolate cake mix, but it would be fun to make your own! I'm sure it would taste great too!

My Shopping List

I really want this book, and the muffin liners are perfect because they come with options for several occasions! Since I really enjoy St. Patrick's Day, I'd love to have the Shamrock pan, and a few other decorating kits for next year's cupcakes too!
