My Favorite Childhood Book, In A People House By Dr. Seuss

Updated on February 25, 2014

I loved to read when I was a child.

Books made my imagination run wild.

My favorite though, I'll share with you.

It was full of rhymes and colors too.

It featured a bird, and a mouse.

The title was: In A People House.

When I was a little girl, my dad bought me a tote bag with a collection of Dr. Seuss books inside. I read them all, but a few particular ones still stand out in my mind. In A People House is one of them. This was my favorite of all, and I read it more than any of the others. Kind of funny thinking about it, I can still recite parts of this book nearly twenty years later.

It is about a mouse who invites a bird into a house. He shows him all the things you will find inside most houses. He shows the bird all the rooms, and lists the different items within. The rhymes always kept me engaged and made it fun to read, and the pictures were so bright and vibrant that they really stood out to me.

I think this would be a great beginners book for children learning to read because it is about things in a house that most children can already relate to. It is such a colorful and catchy book, and there was just something about it that really stood out to me. I remember reading this book and it referenced bureau drawers, which was a big word for me and something I hadn't heard of. I thought it was such a strange and funny word, since the picture that it was showing I always called a dresser.

I used to read it, and then search around my own house for the things that were mentioned in the story. It was a fun little game I made up, and it was so exciting to find things in my own home that I had just read about in the book. When I think of In A People House, a few things happen. My mind is filled with bright colorful images, and I begin to recite the little rhymes in my head. I picture peanuts, and popcorn. I see a bright purple ball and piano. I remember the fun times I had reading it as a child, and I plan on sharing it with my own children someday.

I've always loved to read and write, and I especially treasured this book. If you have children starting to read, I think this would be the perfect story to start with. Show them the wonderful world of Dr. Seuss that we knew growing up, and engage their minds with happy rhymes and colorful pictures. You could even make a game out of it like I did, and see if they can find the objects too! I think this is a great learning activitiy, and a fun way to engage and interest your child.

The more that you read, the more things you will know.

The more that you learn, the more places you'll go.

I loved all of these Dr. Seuss books as well. Particularly One Fish Two Fish, but I have read and enjoyed them all. As old as these stories are, they are truly one of a kind. I think we should keep these wonderful books alive for our children, and share with them an author that we all have known and loved.

Great book for kids just beginning to read. A wonderful way to teach them the alphabet, and enjoy it at the same time. I remember reading this as a child as well, and really loved it!
