Fried Green Tomatoes, An Unforgettable Movie

Updated on March 9, 2014

I can only imagine the look on Ed's face, when he found out his wife Evelyn had repeatedly rammed her car into a young women's convertible out of rage. The young woman had stolen her parking space, then made a snide remark to her. You see, Evelyn Couch was going through a lot of emotional ups and downs at the time- so she was a bit on edge! The only time she seemed to be at peace was when she was visiting her family at the nursing home.

It was at the nursing home where she met Ninny, a very sweet old lady who had so many great stories to tell. She begins telling Evelyn about a girl she knew back in the 1920s, Idgie Threadgoode. The majority of the movie Fried Green Tomatoes is actually the reenactment of the story she tells, the life of Idgie.

Idgie was a character you would never forget. Because of the loss of her big brother when she was young, she always kept to herself, and put up walls when others tried to get through to her. It worried her mother that she was so reserved, so she sent for Ruth Jamison to try and come befriend her. Someone who could really relate to the loss that she was feeling.

Idgie is a tomboy, fishing, bee charming, poker playing, on the edge kind of girl. Ruth is a sweet, gentle, caring, religious, friendly and outgoing girl. So as you can imagine the two have their obstacles to overcome in their ever evolving friendship. Though it takes a long time for Ruth to get through to Idgie and help her to open up, she eventually does. They become very close and the best of friends, this movie follows the women as they go from young girls to adults. Because they are so different, they each help the other better themselves. Idgie helps Ruth to become more outspoken and live on the edge. In return Ruth tames Idgie's wild side a bit, and the two friends really balance each other well!

They face several trials and obstacles in their lives. Together they always seem to get through everything. They even open up their own cafe together, The Whistlestop Cafe. They serve the best fried green tomatoes there, which is where the title came from! This movie is definitely about character development, and you truly get to see all the characters learn and grow. It shows you the true meaning of friendship, standing up for what you believe in, and really touches your heart. Because of the inspiring story Ninny had to tell, Evelyn is inspired to better herself as well.

Ninny's story of Idgie Threadgoode has Evelyn coming back to the nursing home all the time to hear more, and it will have you glued to the couch as well. There is even a nice surprise at the end of the movie, and it will leave you with a smile (or a few happy tears) for sure. This is the most heartfel, touching movie that I have ever seen. I'm still wondering about the murder, and the secret sauce at the restaurant though!

This is the book the movie was based off of. In my experience books are always better than the movies, but sadly I have yet to read it!
